Example interview questions for in-house legal interviews

October 14, 2025

Whether you’re applying for a General Counsel role or a junior legal position, in-house interviews are designed to assess how your legal expertise supports the company’s broader strategy, risk posture, and operational goals.

The questions below are commonly asked by employers to evaluate your ability to navigate legal complexity, collaborate cross-functionally, and contribute to long-term business success. They also help interviewers understand how you approach compliance, risk mitigation, and legal leadership.

These questions assess how your legal advice influences business decisions and supports strategic objectives.

  • Share an instance where your legal advice directly influenced a major business decision. How did you balance legal risk with business objectives?
  • What do you see as the most significant legal challenges or opportunities for our industry in the near future, and how would you address them?
  • How do you ensure that the legal department operates efficiently and cost-effectively while maintaining high-quality legal services?

These questions explore your approach to resolving complex issues and staying ahead of regulatory change.

  • Describe a complex legal issue or dispute you successfully resolved in your previous role. What strategies did you employ?
  • How do you stay updated on the latest developments in laws and regulations that affect our industry, and how do you ensure that the legal team is aligned with these changes?
  • What strategies do you use to proactively mitigate legal risks before they become issues?
  • Can you provide an example of a time when your proactive approach helped prevent a significant legal or business problem?

Collaboration and culture

These questions help interviewers understand how you work across departments and contribute to team success.

  • Can you describe a time when you had to collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as finance, HR or compliance, to address a legal issue? How did you ensure effective communication and outcomes?
  • In your experience, what are the key qualities that make an in-house legal team successful and how would you contribute to fostering those qualities in our team?
  • How do you manage competing priorities and urgent legal matters while balancing your long-term strategic goals for the department?

These questions assess your technical expertise and ability to navigate sensitive leadership challenges.

  • Can you walk us through how you approach contract negotiation and drafting, especially when there are conflicting interests between the parties involved?
  • Have you ever been faced with a situation where you had to advise against a course of action that was popular with senior leadership? How did you handle it, and what was the outcome?

What questions could I ask during an interview?

Interviews aren’t just about making a good impression, they’re your opportunity to assess whether the role and organisation are the right fit for you. These questions will help you do just that.

  • How do you appraise the performance of your employees?
  • What would I expect to be involved in during my first 3/6/12 months?
  • What are the long-term prospects for the successful applicant?
  • Ask about the interviewer’s background. This will give you the chance to gather your thoughts
  • Why has the position become available?
  • What is the culture of your organisation?
  • What is the policy of your company on training and development?
  • What are the future plans of the company?
  • Who do you regard as your main competitors?
  • What type of employee is historically successful in your company?
