GC Roundtable wrap-up: Exploring ESG and sustainability in corporate leadership.

Taylor Root had the pleasure of hosting a GC roundtable on ESG and Sustainability, bringing together some of the brightest minds in the legal sphere. Thanks to Veronica Lai for sharing her expert insights, and to Adrian Yeo for moderating the event. It was wonderful to see our guests participating with such passion and enthusiasm!

Here are some of the key takeaways from the roundtable discussion:

  • Navigating the Early Days of Sustainability: Veronica shed light on the challenges she faced at StarHub when sustainability was in its infancy. Clear goals and understanding the distinctions between corporate disclosure and products became crucial in a landscape filled with competing standards.
  • Advocacy in APAC: Unlike the West, where ESG regulations are more mature, the APAC market is still developing. Advocacy, both internally and externally, is paramount. As lawyers, our strength lies in convincing stakeholders, making them realize how sustainable practices lead to impacts that are of benefit to them.
  • ABCs of Sustainability: Awareness, Business Integration, and Consistency – the essentials for a sustainable approach. Understanding why sustainability matters, integrating it into daily operations, and ensuring consistency across the board are critical for success.
  • NGOs and Corporates Collaboration: In Asia, NGOs lean towards collaboration over litigation. Regulatory frameworks adaptable across regions would benefit NGOs. For corporates, global teams supporting with knowledge and guidelines are essential. A proposal to the government based on global pitfalls could pave the way for smoother sustainability transitions.
  • Green Financing and Business Sustainability: Veronica’s experience with green bonds showcased the importance of clear and ambitious targets. An in-depth inventory of emissions helped focus efforts on the most challenging areas. Sustainability isn’t just about the environment; it’s about the sustainability and profitability of the business.

A very heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for an inspiring and informative discussion.
