Job Details

Our client is a leading global law firm with more than 5,000 people across over 30 countries. They are a full-service firm with deep niche and sector expertise. Whatever the challenge and wherever it arises, the firm is equipped and ready to meet it. Purpose-led and grounded in strong values, they view the fast-moving, rapidly changing world as a place where everyone can thrive. They are ambitious for their clients, their communities – and for you. Whether you’re just starting your career or well established, whether you’re a lawyer or in business services, if you’re looking for what’s next, they are too.

What to Expect

As a lawyer, you will enjoy a wide variety of work across regional, national and international matters and across practice groups. With our client, you will develop a strong global mindset. You’ll be encouraged to put ideas into action, and there will always be new opportunities to get involved in. This is a place where people thrive and succeed, and where the future is full of opportunity.

The Team

Our client’s highly regarded Commercial Dispute Resolution team is dynamic, collaborative and focused on delivering high-quality work on complex and often international disputes. The team acts for a diverse client base ranging from local enterprises to national and global businesses, as well as states and state‑owned entities.

The practice offers exposure to major business disputes, class actions, and strategic commercial advisory work, with opportunities to develop specialist expertise. The team generates and leads much of its own work, giving lawyers real ownership, visibility and experience on some of the firm’s largest mandates.

Due to continued growth, our client is seeking an Associate to join the team in Birmingham. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside experts in areas such as corporate disputes, group actions, supply chain disputes, technology and outsourcing disputes, and civil fraud matters, as well as with sector specialists in Automotive, Aerospace & Defence, Industrial Engineering, Technology & Outsourcing and Energy/Utilities.

While the Associate role requires strong generalist skills, there is real scope to specialise over time – making this an ideal role for ambitious lawyers seeking structured development in a supportive, high‑performance environment.

Role and Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Represent clients on a broad range of commercial disputes, including matters involving high‑profile energy and utilities clients, and leading industrial, technology, manufacturing and consumer businesses.
  • Work on some of the largest and most complex cases within the firm, as well as managing smaller standalone matters.
  • Work directly with partners and senior lawyers, and collaborate within larger teams for major disputes.
  • Engage actively with clients and colleagues across the business.
  • Contribute to business development initiatives and help build client relationships.

Skills and Experience

Our client is looking for:

  • Strong academic background and legal training, ideally with experience in commercial dispute resolution.
  • 1-5 years’ post‑qualification experience with exposure to a range of commercial disputes.
  • A proactive, motivated approach and the flexibility to handle varied matters, with opportunities to develop specialist expertise (e.g., international arbitration, technology disputes, product liability).
  • A track record of providing excellent client service.
  • Exposure to business development activity and a good understanding of how to win work.
  • Excellent communication skills to build strong relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • International or cross‑border experience (desirable but not essential).

What’s in It for You?

Our client offers a comprehensive benefits package focused on supporting your development, performance, wellbeing and long‑term future. Highlights include:

  • Fair, transparent and equitable reward.
  • Recognition for performance, alignment to values and contributions beyond expectations.
  • Flexible, agile and hybrid working options.
  • Healthcare, dental and wellness support.
  • A strong commitment to diversity, inclusion and belonging.
  • Structured professional and personal training, mentoring and development programmes.
  • International and cross-functional exposure.
  • Opportunities to contribute through pro bono work and community engagement.
  • Retirement, insurance and assurance benefits.

Diversity & Inclusion

“Inclusive” is a core value for our client. They bring together diverse skillsets, mindsets and approaches, fostering a culture where ideas can be shared freely and individuals are respected. Collaboration is central to their success, and they work hard to maintain a diverse and inclusive environment through robust policies, monitoring, reporting and external partnerships.

Flexible working options are widely supported, and the recruitment process can be adjusted where needed to enable every candidate to perform at their best.
