The client

Our client is in the real estate space and seeking a General Counsel to join their business to lead on a range of complex in-house legal matters and work closely with executives of the business to aid growth, support business strategies and manage legal risk within the group whilst being pragmatic and commercial to support business objectives.

The Role

As a General Counsel of the business, you will work as key and sole legal contact and a trusted advisor to the SMT and Executives as well as other business units on a broad range of in-house legal and stategic matters as well as land acquisition and sale lead.

This role requires ability to lead with confident, to drive impactful results, influence through a pragmatic and commercial approach and to be a a key advisor on a range of important legal matters across business functions. You will be involved in strategic matters as well as day to day legal matters that arise and will be a pivotal part of the group’s legal and commercial operations.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing, negotiating and structuring real estate matters such as land acquisitions and sales.
  • Mitigating legal risk through the implementation of strategies, advising on steps and audits
  • Leading on broader legal matters including commercial contracts, corporate governance, data protection, employment and compliance initiatives.
  • Ensuring all legal policies are up to date and fit for purpose
  • Management of legal budgets and partenering and liaising with external counsel on business critical and niche legal matters. Advising the business on what should be kept in-house and what should be outsourced to external legal advisors.
  • Building relationships and collaborating with business partners across the group.
  • Supporting on litigation matters and partnering with external counsel
  • Being a trusted advisor to the group on all business critical initiaves and projects
  • Company secretarial duties

About you

To be successful in this role you will likely hold the below experience;

  • Be an established senior counsel with leadership experience aa a head of legal, general counsel or legal director
  • Have a minimum of 9/10 Years PQE as a solicitor with must-have expertise in real estate and broader in-house legal exposure at leadership level.
  • Have experience in areas such as corporate governance, company secretarial, compliance and data protection
  • Have the ability to work well under pressure and tight deadlines and ability to partner closely with senior members of a business in a fast paced and dynamic business environment.
  • Be confident your approach but able to build lasting relationships and work collaboratively as a team
  • Be able to offer commercially driven advice whilst mitigating risk in a pragmatic way
  • Be able ot negotiate with business partners in a tactful way
  • Be solutions focused and able to offer sound advice to complex legal challenges.

Duration of contract: Initial term is 6 months

Location: Our client has offices in a number of locations in the UK. Travel occasionally can be expected but client happy to accommodate flexibility in terms of homeworking as long as there is willingness to be present when absolutely required.

Salary: Highly competitive in the market
