Legal Counsel – Litigation
We’re seeking a commercially sharp lawyer with litigation experience to join my client, a financial institution in Hong Kong, with key SFC focus on virtual assets, OTC derivatives, and sponsor obligations. This is an ideal move for a Hong Kong-qualified solicitor (3+ years PQE) – whether you’re a high-calibre lawyer from a top law firm ready to transition in-house, or you already bring solid in-house experience from a financial institution or regulated entity. You’ll handle litigation, regulatory tracking, advice on SFC Type 1/4/6/9 activities, direct investments, NPA disposals, project structuring, and template updates – collaborating closely with business teams, Head Office Legal, and external counsel.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the company’s full litigation process, including handling disputes, claims, and related proceedings.
- Monitor and research updates to laws, regulations, and regulatory developments relevant to the company’s operations.
- Provide practical legal advice on core business activities, including (but not limited to):
- Direct investment transactions
- Regulated activities under SFC licences (Type 1: Dealing in Securities, Type 4: Advising on Securities, Type 6: Advising on Corporate Finance, Type 9: Asset Management)
- Non-performing asset disposal and recovery
- Draft, review, and periodically update the company’s standard legal templates and documentation.
- Offer legal input on project structuring, business plans, and new initiatives to ensure compliance and risk mitigation.
- Coordinate with Head Office’s Legal Department on required legal reports and updates.
- Liaise and collaborate effectively with external counsel, law firms, and other professional advisors as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or above, with valid Hong Kong solicitor qualification (practising certificate).
- At least 3 years of post-qualification experience as a lawyer.
- Prior exposure to Chinese financial institutions or well-regarded law firms is a strong advantage.
- Proactive, diligent, and detail-oriented work style with strong sense of responsibility.
- Excellent communication skills, ability to work independently, and solid team player.
- High proficiency in both written and spoken English and Chinese (Mandarin essential).
