If you eventually leave Australia on a temporary visa, you can usually claim your super via the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/individuals-and-families\/super-for-individuals-and-families\/super\/temporary-residents-and-superannuation\/departing-australia-superannuation-payment-dasp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP)<\/a>&nbsp;process (tax applies to the payment components). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia\u2019s Government\u2011funded Paid Parental Leave (PPL) is expanding to 26 weeks by July 2026 (it\u2019s currently 25 weeks). A significant update from 1 July 2025 is that the Government will also pay 12% superannuation on Government PPL (paid to your fund after year\u2011end processing). The policy detail is explained in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gov.au\/media\/new-laws-expand-paid-parental-leave-more-support-working-families-biggest-expansion-2011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prime Minister\u2019s media release on PPL changes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/paid-parental-leave-scheme-changes?context=64479\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Services Australia\u2014Paid Parental Leave scheme changes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accommodation and cost of living: what to budget<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most relocating lawyers start with two to four weeks in a serviced apartment and secure a longer\u2011term rental in person. Rents are city\u2011 and suburb\u2011specific, but as a January 2026 snapshot: Sydney medians around $900\/wk for houses and $760\/wk for apartments; Melbourne around $570\/wk (houses) and $580\/wk (apartments); Brisbane around $700\/wk (houses) and $675\/wk (apartments). These are advertised medians; your actual rent will vary by location and property type. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting around: public transport and driving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Public transport is straightforward and largely cashless. Sydney\/NSW uses <a href=\"https:\/\/transportnsw.info\/tickets-fares\/opal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Opal<\/a> (contactless cards and phones also work for Adult fares), Melbourne\/Victoria runs on <a href=\"https:\/\/transport.vic.gov.au\/tickets-and-myki\/myki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">myki<\/a> (including mobile myki on Android), and Brisbane\/South East Queensland uses the <a href=\"https:\/\/translink.com.au\/tickets-and-fares\/go-card\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">go card<\/a> (covering trains\u2014including Airtrain\u2014buses, ferries and trams). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driving is common, but licence conversion rules differ by state and by your visa or residency status (this has changed since older six\u2011month \u201ccatch\u2011all\u201d advice). In NSW, permanent residents convert within three months, while temporary visa\u2011holders who intend to live in NSW six months or more must convert within six months (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.service.nsw.gov.au\/transaction\/transfer-an-overseas-driver-licence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Service NSW\u2014transfer an overseas driver licence<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsw.gov.au\/driving-boating-and-transport\/driver-and-rider-licences\/visiting-or-moving-to-nsw\/visiting-from-overseas-or-interstate\/new-rules-faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NSW rules FAQ)<\/a>. In Victoria, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vicroads.vic.gov.au\/licences\/convert-your-licence\/convert-overseas-licence\">convert within six months<\/a> if you\u2019ll live there more than six months. In Queensland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qld.gov.au\/transport\/licensing\/driver-licensing\/overseas\/transfer\">convert within three months<\/a> of becoming a resident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Healthcare: how Medicare fits into the picture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia\u2019s public system, Medicare, is funded in part by the 2% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/individuals-and-families\/medicare-and-private-health-insurance\/medicare-levy\/what-is-the-medicare-levy\">levy<\/a>. If you\u2019re new to the system, it helps to know that the UK\u2013Australia reciprocal healthcare agreement provides access to medically necessary care for short stays; longer\u2011term residents typically enrol in Medicare and often add private hospital cover to avoid the Medicare levy surcharge at higher incomes. If you are required to complete certain modules, they are generally easy and short online workshops that are completed over the course of a few weeks. Most Australian lawyers complete the PLT whilst working fulltime as the requirements are not onerous<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>English testing (may be formally required but is often waived)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Final requirements that depend heavily on individual PQE and recency of practice<br><br>The Australia\u2013UK Free Trade Agreement did not introduce automatic mutual recognition, so the standard assessment process still applies.
