When growing a legal team from scratch<\/a>, particularly in smaller, fast-paced organisations, it\u2019s important to ensure that team members have the expertise and the ability to handle a variety of legal challenges. Anastasia Evans stresses the need for flexibility in hiring. \u201cWhen you are a small, lean legal team in a fast-paced organisation, it\u2019s important to make sure that your team has focus areas as well as generalist capabilities,\u201d she explains. This dual skillset ensures that legal professionals can quickly adapt to new and unforeseen challenges, even in areas of law they may not be familiar with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generalist capabilities are invaluable in environments where work is unpredictable. The ability to transition between different legal domains and respond to emerging issues is crucial for keeping the organisation agile and resilient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cultivate business acumen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For legal teams to truly add value, team members need to understand not just the law but also the business in which they operate. Evans explains, \u201cI always make sure I\u2019m asking in interviews to gauge their interest and understanding of the sector,\u201d she says. \u201cThey have to be aligned with the business\u2019s strategic goals, because if they don\u2019t have that interest, they\u2019re probably not going to fulfil that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By ensuring that legal team members are invested in the company\u2019s success, organisations can tap into lawyers who think creatively about how to support business objectives. Dipali Sahni highlights the strategic importance of building a diverse in-house team <\/a>with varied backgrounds. \u201cWhen you’re in a larger organisation, you have more resources \u2013 and I don\u2019t just mean money, I mean the people around you,\u201d she notes. However, she points out that in smaller teams, it\u2019s even more critical to hire individuals with the right mix of skills and experience. \u201cSkills are extremely important, especially when you don\u2019t have a liquid resource,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further, diverse experiences\u2014whether from private practice, other in-house roles or even non-legal backgrounds\u2014can inject fresh perspectives and new ideas into a legal team. \u201cIf you\u2019re starting a business and don\u2019t know what tomorrow holds, strategic hires become incredibly important,\u201d Sahni explains. By diversifying the team\u2019s skillsets and backgrounds, organisations can better navigate uncertainty and deliver strategic legal counsel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ehsan Haque underscores the importance of cultivating relationships, even in remote environments. \u201cIf you build the relationship, then you can effectively communicate what you want done, how you want it done and you can translate your vision of how you want the team to operate,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His emphasis on building strong relationships from day one highlights the importance of investing time and effort into creating a foundation of trust and collaboration, which ultimately leads to greater alignment and clearer communication within the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sahni highlights the need for legal professionals to be adaptable and ready to tackle new areas of law. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be able to handle anything that comes your way. I was never an employment lawyer, but I had to pick it up. You have to have that attitude,\u201d Sahni says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
