Taylor Root is pleased to be exclusively partnering with the Economist Group to help them recruit a Data Privacy Counsel in their legal team.

Headquartered in London the Economist Group is a global media, publishing and consulting business that has been a market leader for over one hundred years. The organisation has a global reach and delivers information through a range of formats, from newspapers and magazines to conferences, films, and digital editions.

The Data Privacy Counsel will be instrumental in shaping the legal and regulatory aspects of the Group's B2C and B2B data strategy worldwide and will lead on the provision of legal advice on data privacy matters on a day-to-day basis.

The position reports to the Global Head of Data Privacy and will have one direct report. As of April 2022, there will also be a hybrid working policy in place of two days in the office (as a minimum).

This position will give the successful candidate the opportunity to work on some of the complex privacy and data protection challenges.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide clear, high-quality legal advice and support on data privacy and data protection matters across the Group
  • Work with the executive team and senior management to inform and shape the current and future B2C and B2B data strategy of the Group in a manner that is compliant with the Group's legal and regulatory obligations
  • Identify and implement improvements and enhancements to our data privacy compliance processes to support the Group's data strategy
  • Keep up to date with, and understand, relevant data privacy laws and regulations globally and advise the business teams in respect of any measures to be implemented
  • Lead our cross-Group Data Privacy Working Group and sit on committees in respect of data privacy matters
  • Lead on the response to any data privacy regulatory requests
  • Draft, review and negotiate various data protection agreements and data protection elements of key commercial contracts being entered into by the Group

Required skills and experiences

  • Admitted as a lawyer in the UK or a relevant EU jurisdiction
  • CIPP/E, CIPM, ISEB Certificate or equivalent Data Privacy qualification considered an asset
  • At least 2 years post-qualification experience
  • Ability to collaborate across a wide range of business stakeholders to drive initiatives through to conclusion
  • A risk-based mindset able to succinctly identify critical areas of concern and construct legally-compliant, commercially-viable solutions
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including distilling complex legal and technical issues into clear, concise messaging to a wide variety of audiences including executive leadership
  • Experience in dealing with global privacy and data-related regulatory frameworks
  • Full and working knowledge of GDPR, UK GDPR and data protection as well as awareness of other data privacy laws around the world
  • Exceptional time management, planning, and organisational skills, with strong analytic capabilities. Attention to detail is a must
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with proven experience in relationship building and partnering.
