The team/ The business: We are working with a Rail Transport company. They are a small team of 3 generalist commercial lawyers and support 12 companies within the group.

None of the operating businesses a have in-house legal teams, so the variety of work can be broad commercial legal matters. Employment, Construction and Property advice are outside the remit of the current role/team and supported by separate legal teams with these specialism.

The work involved:

Aside from business as usual commercial legal matters:

  • There is expected to be significant focus on the implementation of the requirements of the Procurement Act between now and October 2024, both in terms of the changes but also existing levels of compliance.
  • There is a large pipeline of IT contracts which will require support over the next 6 – 8 months (contract of significant value), however some of this work will involve extensions or review of enterprise agreements.
  • The bid team is fairly active and needs legal support, the highest profile bid which is in the public domain.

This is a new role so it will take a few weeks for the commercial work to build up, which should hopefully allow time to focus on the Procurement Act/procurement compliance.

The changes for their business aren’t expected to be significant but it presents an opportunity to revisit procurement processes, templates and ways of working – it would be very useful to have someone with practical regulated procurement/ public procurement experience from another organisation. This being said, a large portion of the role will be commercial contract review and negotiation.

This additional resource will also help our client navigate periods of leave for team members in June and August.

The ideal candidate:

  • An experienced in-house counsel and qualified solicitor
  • Ideally seeking someone with 5+ years PQE
  • Experience with broad commercial legal matters is a must
  • Experience with procurement act and public procurment is also required to be succesful in the role
  • A team player and likes diverse range of work and enjoys building relationships with stakeholders at all levels
  • Adaptable, supportive and pro-active in nature

Day Rate: Competative day rate (inside IR35) – You can work on Taylor Root’s Payroll or through an umbrella company.

Hybrid Working: Ideally 1-2 days a week in London

Start Date: June 2024 (Ideally Early June)
