The Role

Our client is seeking an innovative and entrepreneurial Senior Associate to join their premier Employment, Industrial Relations and Safety team in Sydney.

This role is designed to be the right hand person to assist the leading Partner in this team (noting that all lawyers will work with all partners, not just in Sydney but interstate and internationally).

This role is unique as no day of work will be the same as the last. One day you will be advising on cutting edge litigation, the next, front page of the newspaper M&A. The team tries to look at things a little differently to the usual and takes a commercial lens to helping clients look at employment issues.

The firm runs a flat structure; they want staff to feel like they are trusted and can be flexible with their time. This role is encouraged to be innovative and entrepreneurial. No idea is a bad one. If you want to try something new, that is a good thing.

You will undertake a range of work that supports and advises blue chip clients across multiple sectors on employment law. The team acts for at least 40% of the ASX 100 and 20% of the ASX 200.

You will have responsibility for running matters and supervising and developing team members, as well as an important role in developing further business opportunities with existing and new clients. You will have extensive client exposure and opportunities to develop a network of relationships. You will benefit from exceptional learning opportunities working in a team of highly ambitious and collaborative legal and support staff.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • have demonstrable experience in delivering advice on a range of employment law matters from a leading top tier private practice, government, or in-house environment;
  • have an excellent academic record, strong communication and teamwork skills;
  • have strong skills and experience in both ‘front end’ and litigation (including employment aspects of large-scale M&A transactions, general protections, payroll projects, whistleblowing and all types of Fair Work Commission proceedings);
  • have a hunger to learn and develop and maintain a market-leading practice.

The Employment, Industrial Relations and Safety (EIRS) team in Australia provides specialist expertise on all legal matters impacting on the employment relationship. Advising employers on a range of litigious, advisory and transactional matters, the team’s expertise includes: employment, industrial relations, discrimination and equal opportunity, work health and safety, crisis management, incident response, board and executive matters and workplace training.

Their sector expertise covers a wide range of industries, including banking and finance, aviation, retail, manufacturing, construction, transport, stevedoring, mining, energy, charities and the public sector. Our global team includes recognised preeminent and leading lawyers in Australia as well as almost 200 lawyers across offices in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and the US.
