The Role
Our client's top tier Environment & Planning team is working on some of the largest energy, resources and infrastructure projects and M&A deals in Australia. They are seeking an experienced Associate / early stage Senior Associate to be part of their NSW Environment & Planning offering.
You will be a key member of the team, providing the opportunity to work on a broad range of environment, planning, native title and climate change issues, with a particular focus on renewable energy projects, resources projects and major transactions with a significant E&P component.
The Team
This Environment & Planning team sits within the Real Estate & Development Group and is an integral part of the firm's leading Projects, Real Estate & Development Practice. You will work collaboratively with the Real Estate, Projects and Corporate Practice Groups in Sydney as well as across jurisdictions, giving our lawyers the opportunity to work on a wide range of major projects and transactions throughout Australia.

You will work in a collaborative environment advising, acting and supporting clients with planning, environmental, climate change and native title issues arising on major transactions and development projects. The team includes specialist Environment & Planning and Native Title Partners and Lawyers, supported by Knowledge Management Lawyers, Paralegals and Practice Assistants. The lawyers in this team work with all Partners in the Environment & Planning practice, providing an opportunity to work on a variety of environment and planning work.

A Typical Day
As a member of this Environment & Planning Team, you will regularly work on landmark matters with blue chip clients within the energy, resources, infrastructure and real estate sectors. The range of services provided by the experienced Environment & Planning legal team is varied. They provide advice in a broad range of areas including: town planning, environmental licensing and impact assessment, corporate due diligence on environmental, planning and native title issues, compulsory acquisition, environmental prosecutions and compliance.

Your role within the team could typically include:

  • Providing strategic planning approval advice for projects across a range of market sectors including energy and renewables, resources, infrastructure and real estate.
  • Undertaking due diligence on environmental, planning and native title issues and advising on environmental, planning and native title issues in the context of major M&A transactions, particularly in the renewable energy and resources sectors.
  • Advising on contaminated land issues and environmental licensing.
  • Advising on biodiversity conservation, heritage and environmental protection legislation and climate change issues.
  • Negotiating voluntary planning agreements at both State and local government levels.
  • Acting on compulsory acquisition matters.

What you'll bring

  • Experience working in an Environment & Planning team, ideally at a well-regarded top tier firm, international firm, Australian firm or boutique firm.
  • Ideally experience working on major energy and resources projects and transactions. Native title experience will also be highly regarded.
  • A willingness to build an understanding of clients and develop effective working relationships.
  • An ability to effectively manage whole matters or discrete elements of larger matters.
  • A willingness to participate in business development activities, such as pitch documents, firm-wide pursuits, article writing, attending industry events and hosting seminars.
  • A desire and ability to grow, both as an Environment & Planning lawyer and leader.
  • A strong team ethic.
  • An ability to establish a professional profile and internal networks.
  • A willingness to develop others through mentoring and sharing experiences and networks.
  • A willingness to build an understanding of clients and develop effective working relationships.
