As part of our \u2018My #TaylorRootJourney\u2019 series, we spoke with Miya Toh, Associate Director and Head of Risk and Compliance in Singapore who spoke about her career in recruitment and journey with us so far. Miya shares with us what she enjoys most about recruitment and working at Taylor Root \u2013 and her key advice to anyone who wants to pursue a career in the recruitment industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you tell us a little about yourself?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I joined Taylor Root in 2021 and head up Risk and Compliance in Singapore. When I’m not working, I’m a proud mom who enjoys relieving stress through yoga and pilates, and I love exploring exotic locations. I know many people perceive headhunters to be social butterflies but I don\u2019t quite fit that mould. I listen more than I speak, that\u2019s actually what I find most interesting about my job \u2013 hearing from candidates and clients from all walks of lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you get into recruitment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Well, it’s a bit different from the usual path. I started in HR within banking and transitioned to an in-house recruitment role. After taking the leap into agency recruitment, I realised I enjoyed that a lot more. I find joy in listening to people and helping them find the right roles or fulfilling our clients‘ needs. That’s what attracted me to this industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did your journey start at Taylor Root?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I was referred by a colleague at our sister company Frazer Jones about a vacancy in Taylor Root \u2013 and I went for it. My ex-colleagues who had joined, shared about the inclusive and collaborative culture, and how everyone is so knowledgeable in their space. And let me tell you, it\u2019s all true! Time has flown by since I joined, and that just shows how incredible my experience has been so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why do you believe in Taylor Root?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The brand speaks for itself \u2013 people know us, people trust us. Clients approach us for legal, risk and compliance recruitment due to our established network and track record. I took the leap of faith because I trust the brand, the reputation we have established over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you like about the culture?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One thing I absolutely love about our culture is the collaboration. It’s not just within Taylor Root but across all The SR Group brands, countries and offices. We all have a common purpose, and that makes this company feel different from others. There’s a sense of trust, respect, and value for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What gets you excited about your role?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I cover compliance across all sectors and get to meet with people from different backgrounds. Learning on the job and applying that knowledge to my work is something I truly adore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your favourite part of working with your team?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The assurance that you\u2019re not alone and you are part of a great team culture that is fully supportive. Everyone is so willing to help and share information \u2013 they constantly check in to make sure things are going well, and that makes me feel included and supported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell us about a recent project you are proud of?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Recently, I had the opportunity to work with my colleague, Celine on a senior hire for a new client. We successfully filled the role, which built trust with the client. Since then, they\u2019ve reached out to work with us exclusively on two further roles, which is rare in a competitive market. It just shows you\u2019re only as good as your team and we really strive to work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice do you have for those starting out in the industry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Just do it! As cliche as that sounds, it\u2019s not an easy industry by any stretch \u2013 but it isn\u2019t as scary as some may think. You need to work on yourself and your own credibility and \u2018branding\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be someone that people can trust, and clients and candidates will come to you for market insights and advice. At the end of the day, we\u2019re all humans – treat people the way you would like to be treated.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
