For Eddie Lawson<\/a>, a seasoned General Counsel, the boardroom isn\u2019t the only place where legal expertise can make a difference. As a Trustee for two charitable organisations, Eddie has found a powerful way to channel his professional skills into causes that matter deeply to him, bringing structure, clarity and impact to the not-for-profit world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Supporting causes close to home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eddie\u2019s Trustee work spans two very different but equally meaningful charities. One is a family-run foundation The Lawson Trust<\/a>, which distributes funds to selected causes, guided by a shared ethos and personal values. The other is a sub-fund of Great Ormond Street Hospital<\/a>, dedicated to advancing research and treatment for childhood cancer, a fund founded by a close friend who tragically lost her daughter to the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a deeply personal connection,\u201d Eddie shares. \u201cI\u2019m honoured to be part of something that not only carries emotional weight but also has the potential to change lives. It\u2019s a privilege to contribute my experience to such important work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bringing rigour to decision-making<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Although Eddie doesn\u2019t come from a medical background, his legal training has proved invaluable in shaping how the fund evaluates and approves grant applications. \u201cWe\u2019ve introduced a scoring system to assess proposals more objectively,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt allows us to compare applications on a level playing field and make decisions that are both fair and transparent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Eddie\u2019s key contributions has been formalising the inclusion of non-scientific projects, such as physiotherapy, massage and therapeutic activities, which were previously funded on an ad hoc basis. \u201cThese initiatives were already making a difference, but now they\u2019re part of our official remit. That clarity helps us stay consistent and accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governance with heart and discipline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eddie\u2019s legal mindset brings a valuable lens to board discussions, especially when resources are limited and tough choices must be made. \u201cWe receive far more applications than we can fund, so it\u2019s essential that our decisions are defensible. I want every applicant to feel they\u2019ve been treated fairly, even if they don\u2019t receive funding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He sees strong parallels between his role as a General Counsel and his work in the charity sector. \u201cIn both settings, it\u2019s about ensuring decisions are made for the right reasons and can stand up to scrutiny. I often find myself helping others articulate their rationale, and making sure it holds up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making space for purpose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eddie\u2019s current role advising a portfolio of startups gives him the flexibility to dedicate time to his Trustee commitments. \u201cI spend about one day a week on charity work,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s incredibly rewarding, not just professionally, but personally. It\u2019s a chance to give back in a way that feels tangible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While legal challenges are rare, they do crop up occasionally, particularly when funding non-UK charities or organisations without formal registration. \u201cThose situations require a bit more scrutiny, but they\u2019re manageable. It\u2019s about applying the same principles of due diligence and risk assessment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advice for other General Counsels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For General Counsels considering Trustee roles, Eddie has a clear message: \u201cDo it. It\u2019s one of the most fulfilling ways to use your skills. You\u2019ll gain new perspectives, challenge your assumptions, and contribute to something bigger than yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His story is a compelling reminder that legal expertise doesn\u2019t just belong in the boardroom, it can be a force for good in communities, charities and causes that need it most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
