Delivering interim legal counsel solutions during a period of rapid team change

The challenge

Our client, a leading multinational fashion retailer, was preparing to manage significant resourcing challenges in its legal team, with three to four roles affected by multiple maternity leaves and the resignation of a Senior Legal Counsel. Direct hiring attempts had already stalled, with two offers declined as a result of salary bandings. This created urgent pressure on the legal function, with the client needing short-notice cover to maintain operations, flexibility through a busy trading period and interim senior support until a permanent replacement could be secured.

The solution

We developed a blended resourcing strategy. To cover maternity leave, we placed two junior-to-mid level Legal Counsels and an interim Employment Counsel on fixed-term contracts. To address the senior gap, we introduced an experienced day-rate contractor on an initial three-month term, with the option to shorten or extend depending on the progress of permanent hiring. This approach ensured speed, flexibility and continuity without long-term commitment.

The outcome

The client gained immediate stability. Two of the fixed-term contract (FTC) hires started on the same day, allowing efficient inductions and a smooth transition. One of the FTCs was later converted into a permanent role following another resignation, filling the gap instantly. The interim Employment Counsel was extended for six months to manage workloads and support a phased maternity return. The day-rate contractor, bringing strong retail expertise, supported the team for four months during peak trading. Through this combined solution, the client maintained resilience and avoided disruption during a period of rapid change.
