South West - Legal Market Overview
Bristol is the main legal and
financial centre in the south of England outside London. Acclaimed as a
centre of legal excellence, the quality of client base continues to act
as a pull for legal talent and an impetus for law firm growth.
With
some firms in the Bristol market recording a significant increase in
profit and revenue growth, many of the traditional Bristol firms have
developed into multi site operations with bases in London, Birmingham
and other key markets. Other Bristol stalwarts have stuck to their
one-site strategy, and successfully harness work that is the envy of

to stay within easier reach of the capital, there are some good quality
commercial and private client firms in Bath, Swindon and Cheltenham.
Salaries in the Region
Salaries differ between the locations, as do the cost of living and property prices. Bristol salaries tend to be at the higher end, as these firms generally try to stay competitive with their London and leading regional counterparts. With a few exceptions, lawyers can expect a discount on London salaries to reflect reduced living costs. Ultimately however, a move South West is not about the money, it is about the ability to combine quality of work and to use a well-worn phrase, quality of life.
