South East
Law firms in the prosperous South East benefit greatly from their proximity to London. Many of the firms in the region attribute their success and growth to attracting London clients, on the basis that they can provide City quality advice at lower charge out rates.
The main legal centres in the South East are Southampton, Portsmouth, Guildford, Basingstoke, Crawley, Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone. Many of these areas house some of the top multi-office London and regional firms as well as some highly respected local firms. All of these locations (or their surrounding areas) offer attractive regions in which to live.
The main attraction of working and living in the South East is the ability to exploit the exceptionally beautiful countryside and coastlines of the region, whilst still only being a short train ride from London. There is the option to live in a more rural setting or, for those not yet ready to lose the buzz of cosmopolitan living, areas such as Tunbridge Wells, Guildford and Southampton are still more affordable than London.
Many lawyers who move from the City to the South East are able to trade their commute on the underground for a short drive to the office (or even a walk!), and shorten their office hours whilst maintaining their quality of work. Areas such as Guildford, Crawley and Tunbridge Wells are also popular for those lawyers on the outskirts of London who do the ‘reverse commute’ – enabling them improve their journey and their work/life balance.
