Location Overview

The Channel Islands are an archipelago located in the English Channel. The main islands are Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm although from a legal and financial services perspective, Jersey and Guernsey are the only significant centres.

Jersey

Location: Approximately 13 miles North of France’s Normandy Coast

Description: Roughly 45 square miles

Climate: Temperate with damp to wet winters but warm, dry, sunny summers

Government: Crown dependency with a parliament separate from the UK and from each of the other Channel Islands

Currency: Jersey pounds (although UK£sterling is widely accepted at a rate of 1:1)

Income Tax: 20% flat rate

Main Business Centre: St Helier - located on the South of the island

Population: Roughly 90,000

Guernsey

Location: Approximately 30 miles North of France’s Normandy Coast

Description: Roughly 40 square miles

Climate: Temperate with damp to wet winters but warm, dry, sunny summers

Government: Crown dependency with a parliament separate from the UK and from each of the other Channel Islands

Currency: Guernsey pounds (although UK£sterling is widely accepted at a rate of 1:1)

Income Tax: 20% flat rate

Main Business Centre: St Peter Port - located on the East of the island

Population: Roughly 65,000

Main Industries: Financial Services and Tourism
