International aspirations? How to make them a reality

When we toast the end of the year and welcome in 2017, it’s clear that the events of 2016 have left the world wondering what the next 12 months will hold. What will happen with Brexit? Will the UK Government invoke Article 50 and leave the European Union and what form will this exit take? And will Trump follow through with his grand plans for the first 100 days of his presidency?

More importantly, what effect will all of this have on the global markets and the opportunities for Australian lawyers who want to spread their wings and work overseas?

As an international recruiter who has helped numerous Australians make that big move, I've seen that it has become tougher than ever for Australians to secure roles with international firms in Europe, the US, Asia and the Middle East.

However, it’s definitely not impossible.

What we need to know then, is how are Australians managing it, and what can you do to ensure that you’re one of the lucky few?

The formula appears to be pretty simple. The ones that are having the greatest success have:

  • top academics;
  • at least 2 years’ experience;
  • work at a top-tier firm;
  • a transactional practice - banking and finance, funds or corporate M&A are in the most demand; and
  • are busy – they are able to demonstrate that they’ve had exposure to a wide range of deals and can compete with lawyers in larger markets for deal flow and complexity of work.

The good news is that if you are a practising lawyer; you have control over 3 of these 5 factors – “which firm”, “what work” and “how busy”.

And the even better news is that despite what may or may not be happening across the globe; confidence in the Australian market is strong, top tier firms are busy and they are all crying out for lawyers in transactional practice areas.

So what are you waiting for? If your ultimate aim to work overseas, you need to get ahead of the curve and secure yourself a role at a firm that will make this possible.

Taylor Root has great relationships with firms, both here in Australia and overseas and if there is a job with your name on it, we’ll know about it. Not only that, with our international connections, we’ll be best placed to help you board that plane in two years’ time to pastures new.
